72 Students Graduate With First Class Honour At FUT, Minna

Seventy two students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, would graduate with first class degrees at the institution’s 28th convocation ceremony scheduled for Feb. 1.
The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Bala, made the disclosure at a news conference in Minna on Friday.
He said 941 of the graduands are in the second class upper category, 1,905 second class lower; 707 third class and 46 pass degrees.
Bala said that 3,671 students would receive first degrees, while 506 would be awarded master degrees.
According to him, 58 others will be given doctorate degrees while 208 will be awarded with post-graduate diplomas.
‘‘A closer look at the figures reveals that the total number of awardees for undergraduate degrees is up by about 20 per cent compared to last year.
‘‘In addition, the numbers of Ph.D and master degrees as well as post-graduate diplomas have all recorded significant increases above those of last year.
‘‘These trends are consistent with the upward trajectory being recorded by the university,’’ he added.
The vice-chancellor noted that a recent survey of employers of labour had shown FUT Minna graduates to be among the most preferred by employers of labour.
He said that the employability index of the university’s graduates stood at 60.61 per cent.
‘‘The university is doing very well in its core areas of teaching, research and community service.
‘‘It has continued to maintain a trajectory of progress and advancement and it is, therefore, not surprising that FUT Minna remains the best specialised university in Nigeria.
‘‘All of the successes being recorded by the university are the results of deliberate and conscientious efforts by staff and students of the university,’’ he said.
The vice chancellor re-affirmed the university’s resolve to maintain a competitive edge in research and development. (NAN)

ASUU Strike Update Today 25th January 2019

ASSU NEWS TODAY; FG HASN’T ADDRESSED CRITICAL AREAS OF FUNDING VARSITIES –ASUU
Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has stated that the Union has not watered down the initial demands it made at the beginning of the on-going strike.
In an interview with Daily Trust on Wednesday, the don stressed that the strike will only end when government addresses the demands of the lecturers.
There have been various back-and-forth meetings between the presidency and the union since the strike started in November 2018. This has been followed by speculations on a possible end to the protest soon.
However, restating the stance on the union’s demands, Ogunyemi stated: “The strike will end when government addresses our minimalist proposal sent to it. We have reduced what we proposed drastically. What we propose now is a far cry from where we started. So, government must address this proposal that we have before it in order to pave way for the suspension of the strike action. Unless it does so, we cannot go back to our members to prevail on them to consider other positions than where we are.
“What we are doing now is that we are making a sacrifice for students to secure their future. We are sacrificing our today so that our children can have public universities that they can be proud of in the future. Those of us who are struggling now, went to public universities and if students are lucky to be in those universities, they should also support us in defending the universities from collapsing.
“The trouble we are making is that we don’t want a situation in which our universities would collapse just like our primary and secondary schools have collapsed. That is the context from which we want people to appreciate the ASUU struggle.”
He also called on well-meaning Nigerians to join the Union in appealing to government to provide positive response to their demands, as it is what is necessary from prevent the collapse of public universities.

ASUU Strike Update Today 23rd January 2019

The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Monday said that it would continue with the ongoing strike unless the Federal Government satisfied their demand on the revitalization.
Speaking after the rescheduled meeting with the FG at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment which lasted about four hours, ASUU president, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, told reporters that the meeting ended with grey areas to be resolved.

He said, “We have not suspended the strike, the discussion will continue at a later date. We are going back to our members for further consultation. FG gave us reaction to our proposals but there were still grey areas that we are trying to sort out.
“Before the strike can be suspended, the most critical area that FG must address is revitalization. It is central to our academic work, unless that area is addressed, our members will still have issues. We are not demanding for N50bn, we are saying that the minimum that FG can release to reactivate revitalization fund is N50bn.”
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, however said that the FG and made substantial commitment to ASUU demands and would meet the leadership again when they were ready. He added that although he had expected a marathon session with ASUU because President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered him to ensure that all issues relating to the strike were resolved, the meeting ended early.
He said, “We did not take a long time than we anticipated. We have other commitments but the important thing is that we have made substantial progress. We have reached some agreements in seven areas. Most of the issues have been resolved but ASUU will need to consult its members and come with what they think.

ASUU Strike Update Day 79: Outcome of 21st January Meeting

The meeting between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government is currently going on at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Abuja. According to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, the aim of the meeting is to ensure the lecturers get back to work.

It was gathered that the National President of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, led the union’s delegation to the meeting. ASUU delegation arrived at the venue some minutes before 4:00 p.m., but no member of the federal government delegation was initially around.
The FG delegation later arrived and the meeting was declared open by Mr Ngige at exactly 5:25 pm.
The minister of education, Adamu Adamu, was absent when the meeting comenced. However, the permanent secretary, Sunny Echono, was present to represent the minister.
Commenting before the meeting, Mr Ogunyemi maintains the union wants the government to get it right this time around. He said it is essential for its demands to be met to ensure quality education
The meeting which lasted for four hours, could not yield a positive result as ASUU Chairman has insisted that the strike will continue. This conclusion was reached, after Federal Government showed no commitment towards the funding and revitalisation of universities.
The ASUU Chairman, Professor Ogunyemi, told newsmen that the issue of funding and revitalisation of universities was too crucial too be left out, and so the union cannot call off the strike if nothing is done to commit to that issue. He said; “The most critical of all is revitalisation,” he said. “Revitalisation is central to our work as academics and unless that area is addressed, members will have issues with ongoing action.”
He then added; “They gave us their response to our proposals, there were still grey areas that we are trying to sort out. So, when we finish those areas, you will know the full outcome.”
On the Federal Government Part, Dr Ngige said; “We have started defraying the end allowances there, we have also released N15.4 billion for the shortfall in payment of salaries, and we have also agreed today to fund revitalisation,” he explained to reporters at the end of the meeting.
Ngige continued; “We are going to expend some money there; this is irrespective of the fact that government has released from the TETfund account about N163 billion.”
ASUU is expected to again, consult with members before taking the next step, and then reach the FG for another meeting, at a later date.
